The historical film has tripled the budget of the original 2000 film.

Universal Studios

Ridley Scott wants to make history with Gladiator 2the sequel to the 2000s classic with Paul Mescal. The film was filmed in Europe, presenting a scale unimaginable in Hollywood. The film has three times the budget of the first part and is one of the most expensive in history.

The historical film has tripled the budget of the original film from 2000, and both Ridley Scott and his team had to face many adversities during filming, much of which caused an increase in production costs. According to The Hollywood Reporter portal, Gladiator 2 had a budget of 165 million dollars, a high figure that according to Paramount it would have amounted to 250 million.

Several sources cite that the sequel has broken the 310 million barrier, to which we should add the future promotional campaign, which is assumed to be gigantic. The first installment of Gladiator It cost around 100 million dollars, a low figure in our days, but more than 20 years separate us and costs and inflation have wreaked havoc on the film world. The main reason why the film seems to have suffered an increase not anticipated by Paramount is clear; the Hollywood strikes that took place last year did damage. It is estimated that between 10 and 20 million dollars correspond to the delays, but American media have other theories.

Gladiator 2, a difficult shoot

The filming of Gladiator 2 has been surrounded by controversy. Was a serious accident during one of the action sequences, which left six people injured by burns of varying degrees, and took four people to the hospital. This caused a delay in the filming of different scenes and forced the production to stop filming for days.

To that we must add a PETA complaint, which led Ridley Scott to deal with the animal rights and ethical treatment organization, which complained about the use of macaques. To further complicate everything, one of the horses used in filming was injured and had health problems due to the high temperatures in Malta. If this expense is confirmed, it would be a movie close to the deliveries of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Endgame (350 and 360 million), rivaling Indiana Jones and the dial of destiny (300) or Avatar: The Sense of Water (350), and somewhat far from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and its more than 400 million.

Gladiator 2 will hit theaters on November 22, telling us the story of Lucius (Paul Mescal), the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), in a plot that will take us 25 years after the successful original installment.
