Conversations when dating: Men want to clarify sex questions, women want to clarify their income

Almost every person who is dating has thought about their choice of topic before a meeting. On the way there you ponder in your head: “What could I ask the new acquaintance without it coming across as strange?” Or you pray like a mantra: “Don’t talk about your ex!”

The dating portal Parship conducted a survey of 1,382 singles between the ages of 18 and 69 for this first delicate small talk. What topics do men and women want on their first dates? And which ones are absolute no-gos? It is also interesting to know which topics are real evergreens for getting to know each other and always arouse a certain level of interest.

At the beginning you should talk about hobbies and general interests. The general attitude towards life and something like life motto also give those looking for a partner a lot of information about the other person. A real conversation opener is the topic of travel. Questions like “Where have you been in the world? What is your favorite place and what travel destinations are still on your bucket list?” often give room for further detailed questions and thus keep the conversation going.

There are differences in topic acceptance in digital and real dating

Before you get to know each other live, you often write to each other on dating portals. Women often receive compliments about their appearance based on their photos as a conversation starter. But just half of those surveyed think that’s okay. Unlike dating in real life, two thirds of the study participants are happy to receive a compliment on their look.

90 percent of women, even more in their thirties, want to talk about work and career on the first date. Women in their thirties probably want to find out early on what their new acquaintance’s financial circumstances are. Especially if you are planning a family. However, more men want to talk about the topic of having children on the first date than women. Here it is 62 percent of men to 52 percent of women – a clear majority.

There is a topic that women hardly want to talk about at the first meeting, but men would rather talk about. It’s sexual preferences. The difference here is very clear: 44 percent of men want their sex questions answered quickly, but only 18 percent of the women surveyed want to talk about the topic. On the other hand, women actually want to talk about their ex-boyfriends, but there are only marginally fewer men who want to avoid this difficult topic.

The topic of politics remains a mood killer for both sides. The survey also showed that politics is more accepted on the first date today than it was some time ago.
