The US comedian Richard Lewis is dead. He was famous for decades of appearances on late-night TV, film and series roles such as most recently in “Leave it, Larry!” (Curb Your Enthusiasm) Lewis died on Tuesday evening (local time) after a heart attack at his home in Los Angeles, his spokesman Jeff Abraham announced on Wednesday. He was 76 years old. In 2023 he made his Parkinson’s disease public.

Lewis made a name for himself on the comedy stages in the USA with associative rollercoaster rides through his neuroses. Many of his fans honored the comedian, who always dressed in black, as the “Prince of Pain”. He played with Jamie Lee Curtis in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the sitcom “Everything But Love” and in Mel Brooks’ “Robin Hood – Heroes in Tights” he played the neurotic Prince John.
A new generation of series fans knew him from “Leave it, Larry!”, where he appeared alongside “Seinfeld” creator Larry David, with whom he had a decades-long friendship. Comedy Central named him one of the 50 best stand-up comedians of all time.
