Sled dog racing on the beach – this has now become a tradition on Usedom. The “Baltic Lights” is taking place for the eighth time. Because there is no snow, the ride is on balloon tires instead of runners.
Celebrities once again raced across Usedom’s Baltic Sea beach in wagons pulled by huskies for a good cause. Among the participants in this year’s edition of “Baltic Lights” on Saturday were actors such as Simone Thomalla, Bernhard Bettermann, Anja Kling, Jan Sosniok, Matthias Schloo and presenter Matthias Killing. Last year’s champions Gerit Kling and her acting colleague Hendrik Duryn were also at the start again at the eighth edition of the event.
Professionals had already taken part in the race. There are around 500 huskies who pull their so-called mushers on wheeled carts over the approximately four kilometer long route on the Baltic Sea beach. The sled dog race is intended to raise money for Welthungerhilfe. Last year, according to organizers, 65,000 euros were raised. Back then, around 60,000 spectators came over three days.
