Queen Elizabeth II receives the incumbent Prime Minister once a week. Boris Johnson is said to have continued to insist on these meetings – despite the coronavirus pandemic. This is what Johnson’s former advisor Dominic Cummings claims.
It has been a tradition since Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952: every Wednesday she invites the incumbent Prime Minister to an audience at Buckingham Palace to discuss current issues. The Queen has received 14 Prime Ministers during her reign, Winston Churchill was the first, Boris Johnson is the current one. Not only does Brexit fall during his term of office, but also the corona pandemic, which hit Great Britain particularly hard last year.
Despite the health risks, Johnson reportedly insisted on continuing to meet the then 94-year-old Queen in person. This is what Johnson’s ex-advisor Dominic Cummings claims all in one. “I said to him, ‘What are you doing?’ and he replied, ‘I will meet the Queen.’ Then I said, ‘What in the world are you talking about? Of course you can’t meet the Queen.’ “Cummings claims to have pointed out to Johnson that several employees at 10 Downing Street were already ill. “I said to him, ‘If you pass the coronavirus on to her and she dies, what are you going to do? You can’t risk that, that’s completely crazy.'” Finally, Boris Johnson is said to have realized that a face-to-face meeting with the very old monarch is not possible.

In fact, at the end of March 2020, the Prime Minister himself fell ill with Covid-19 and so seriously that he had to be treated temporarily in the intensive care unit of a London hospital. The Queen retired to Windsor Castle during the pandemic. The conversations with Johnson took place only over the phone. It was not until the end of June that the Prime Minister and the Queen met again in person for the first time in Buckingham Palace.
10 Downing Street has denied Dominic Cummings’ claims. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, the prime minister has taken the necessary measures to protect lives, guided by sound scientific advice,” said a government statement. The conversation about a possible visit to the Queen never took place.

Dominic Cummings worked for several years as a consultant and close confidante of Boris Johnson. The 49-year-old is considered to be the architect of the Brexit agreement. In November 2020, however, there was a falling out between the two men. Since then, Cummings has been engaged in a kind of campaign of revenge and chatted internal government matters. He accuses Boris Johnson of a failure in corona politics; the prime minister would put his own political ambitions above people’s lives.
