To the sound of the European anthem they go to hell: those corrupt members of the Council of Europe “On the brink” of all (pseudo) morality in Daniel Harrich’s political thriller (yesterday, ARD). The satirically pointed ending skewers their crimes: greenwashing, greed for profit in the fight for raw materials, bribery scandals, human rights violations. The setting is the raw material source Azerbaijan, where a member of the German Bundestag struggles to free his stepdaughter (Luna Jordan) – a blogger for human rights – from the clutches of the dictatorial system.
Axel Milberg, Sebastian Bezzel and Heiner Lauterbach play the high-profile corrupt guard who deceive their party colleague (Hans-Jochen Wagner), who warns: “The Council of Europe is in danger of degenerating into a club that serves more to secure economic influence than the Human Rights.” The feature film was followed by an investigative documentary on topics that are as ambivalent and relentlessly intertwined as fiction and reality on this explosive TV evening.
