Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal to star in new version of ‘Othello’

Washington will play the title character, while Gyllenhaal will play the antagonist Iago.

Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal They will return to Broadway. They will star in a revival of the tragedy of Shakespeare “Othello”which premieres in spring 2025 and is sure to be one of the most buzzy entries of the season.

Kenny Leonwho won a Tony for directing the 2014 revival of “A Raisin in the Sun”, starring Washington, will direct the production of “Othello.” Washington will play the title character, while Gyllenhaal will play the antagonist Iago, who tries to convince Othello that his wife has been unfaithful to him. The role of Desdemona, Othello’s wife, has not yet been cast. No theater has been set up, according to the New York Times, which first reported the news.

“Othello” was last revived on Broadway in 1982 with James Earl Jones like Othello and Christopher Plummer like Iago. Oliver Parker adapted the play into a 1995 film, directed by Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth Branagh. That cinematographic shot was before the film of the same name by Orson Welles from 1951, which was plagued by production headaches but was later hailed as a classic.

Washington, the Academy Award-winning actor for “Training Day” and “Glory”was last on Broadway in the 2018 revival of “The Iceman Cometh”. Gyllenhaal, who we’ll see next in the upcoming action thriller “Road House”earned a Tony nomination for the 2019 play “Sea Wall/ A Life”. She also appeared on the Great White Way in productions of the classic Stephen Sondheim “Sunday in the Park With George” and “Constellations”.
