Oscars 2024: This is how the award ceremony went from a German perspective

Emma Stone nabbed the Oscar for leading actress. But Sandra Hülser can feel like a winner in another way.

From a German perspective, the 96th edition of the Oscars had great potential in several respects – although not as rich as last year, when “All Quiet in the West” exceeded all expectations and won four Academy Awards. Of course, the nomination of Sandra Hülser (45) for her role in the film “Anatomy of a Case” reigned supreme this year. In the end she had to admit defeat to Emma Stone (35) for Best Actress, but she was still able to celebrate elsewhere.

“The Zone of Interest” wins

Germany’s chances were greatest for the “Best International Film”. So it wasn’t just “The Teacher’s Room” – the German contribution by İlker Çatak (40) – that was nominated. The German director Wim Wenders (78) was also represented – for the Japanese contribution “Perfect Days”. In the end, both works could not win, as the British film “The Zone of Interest” by Jonathan Glazer (58) lived up to its role as favorite.

Still, from a German perspective, a great success: In the haunting film about Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höß and his family, Sandra Hülser and Christian Friedel (45) once again shine in the two main roles. You can feel like a winner – even without holding an Oscar in your hands.
