The teleprompter is broken, the moderation sheet has disappeared: Peter Kloeppel dreams of mishaps in front of the camera at night when he should actually be enjoying vacation or free time.
The outgoing RTL anchorman Peter Kloeppel has been haunted by nightly nightmares about work while on vacation and on weekends off for more than 30 years. “I have recurring nightmares that revolve around moderating,” the 65-year-old told the magazine “Stern” in an interview. “It’s 6:45 p.m. – and I realize: I’m not in the studio, but somewhere else entirely. Or I come on the show and all the preparation is suddenly gone: the prompter isn’t loaded, my notes aren’t there.”
In the “Stern” interview, Kloeppel spoke of a “stage fear in dreams.” This fear is perhaps also the reason why he always meticulously prepares for work. “My dreams never ended well.”
He now manages to calm himself down even during short periods of wakefulness, said the journalist. “Then I say to myself: Don’t worry, everything is fine. You’re not in the studio – you’re in bed. You also have pants on, your teeth are still in, everything is fine.” It was now announced that Kloeppel will be retiring from work as a television presenter this year. “My last shipment is at the end of August.”
