Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the pianist Pablo Ziegler, winner of a Latin Grammy, began playing classical repertoire at the age of 14. In the early 60s, influenced by bebop and dixieland, he began playing jazz. It was at that time that he created the Pablo Ziegler Terceto, which reflected his musical history through jazz arrangements of classical music.
In 1978, he was invited to join Astor Piazzolla’s second Quintet, with whom he played for 10 years, throughout Europe, Japan and the United States, at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Nice Jazz Festival, Sapporo Jazz Festival, Central Park Summer Stage, and the Istanbul Festival among others.
Pablo Ziegler He formed his own Quartet for Nuevo Tango in 1990 that combined classic tango rhythms with jazz improvisations, something that was not common at that time in the tango lexicon. Renee Vargas Vera of La Nación said: “PABLO ZIEGLER is one of Piazzolla’s authorized voices. However, as a creative musician, he knows how to find his own voice to transmit it, to recreate it in its various facets. But, also, as a composer who was able to prolong Piazzollana aesthetics and reveling in it as a consecrated and sure-successful brand, he has preferred to delve into the tango memory to take a retrospective look full of unction, and rescue old voices that he transfigures into new forms and dimensions.” – UG Mauro del Diario La Capital said: Although he has a solid classical training, Ziegler, after dedicating himself to jazz, achieved international recognition by joining Astor Piazzolla’s legendary quintet. His natural talent for urban music and his jazz experience allowed him to be one of the few pianists who cultivates improvisation in the field of tango.
In 1998, he recorded “Tango Romance” for BMG, with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Other orchestral performances have been with the Royal Philharmonic of London, the Sydney Symphony, the Stavanger Symphonic Orchestra of Norway, the Filarmónica de México, the Banda Sinfónica de Estado de Sao Pablo de Brazil etc.
In 1999, his performance at Carnegie Hall with his Quintet for Nuevo Tango was recorded and aired for six months on PBS. Her guests on this occasion included the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Gary Burton, Ryota Komatsu and Argentine singers Maria Graña and JATrelles. Also in 1999 he was invited to participate in “Music of the Americas” for The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, where he was honored with a bronze plaque, for his contribution to the evolution of tango.
The Mayor of New Orleans also honored him for his artistic quality, with the title of Honorary Citizen of the City of New Orleans. Other honors include Steinway & Sons New York naming him a Steinway Artist in 1998.
Since 2002, Pablo Ziegler has performed with his quartet once a year, at Jazz Standard in NY with special guests, such as Paquito D’Rivera, Stefon Harris, David Sánchez, Randy Brecker, Gil Goldstein, James Carter, Edmar Castañeda, Dave Samuels, Harry Allen, Kenny Garrett, Nestor Torres and Terell Stafford. In the Spring of 2007 he did a residency at Indiana University-Latin American Music Center, the University of Texas, Austin, the University of Maryland, Washington DC and later at the University of Iowa.
In 2002 and 2004, Maestro Ziegler was the Musical Director of the complete version of the Operita “Maria de Buenos Aires”, by A. Piazzolla, where he also played. The first was an Italian production in Ravenna and Bologna, with 10 presentations and the second was a Dutch production, which toured Holland, Belgium and Hungary for a month.
