Alec Baldwin is making allegations against prosecutors who are charging him with the “Rust” tragedy. Can he avoid a trial?
Alec Baldwin (65) is actually scheduled to go on trial in the case of the shot “Rust” camerawoman Halyna Hutchins (1979-2021) from July of this year. The actor is accused of negligent homicide. Now, however, the star and his lawyer have filed an application in court, making serious allegations against the public prosecutor’s office. The majority of the witnesses interviewed, whose statements ultimately led to Baldwin’s indictment, were strongly prejudiced.
For this reason, according to the report, Baldwin is now trying to avoid the trial completely. At least seven witnesses were therefore not admissible for various reasons. Three of them are on the payroll of the public prosecutor’s office and two are on the payroll of the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office. Another witness is already taking action against Baldwin in another civil case and another has blamed the actor for it immediately after the fatal accident – even though the person in question was not supposed to have been there at the time.
Another accusation is serious
But it’s not just the witnesses who are massively criticized in the application. A report from the public prosecutor’s office regarding the revolver that fired the fatal shot was also incorrect. So far it has been said that the tests have shown that no shot could be fired without pulling the trigger. However, this was supposedly proven – if there were six bullets in the weapon, as was the case on the day of the accident. Baldwin claims that he did not pull the trigger and that the shot went off on its own.
Baldwin’s trial for involuntary manslaughter is currently scheduled to begin on July 9, 2024. As with the recently convicted weapons master Hannah Gutierrez-Reed (26), it will – if it stays that way – be heard in a court in Santa Fe in the US state of New Mexico.
The master-at-arms was in charge of the weapons during production of the western film in New Mexico in October 2021 when a gun operated by lead actor and co-producer Baldwin went off during a rehearsal. The camerawoman died in the incident and director Joel Souza (50) was injured. Gutierrez-Reed faces up to 18 months in prison.
