Crime: R. Kelly appeals after abuse conviction

R. Kelly was once an acclaimed star musician, but is now in prison for sexual abuse. The singer is now taking action against the verdict.

The US singer R. Kelly (57), who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for, among other things, sexual abuse of minors, has appealed. The musician’s lawyers argued at a hearing in a New York court that prosecutors did not present enough evidence and that he did not get a fair trial. The public prosecutor’s office rejected the allegations. Kelly himself was not present at the hearing. It may be a while before a final decision is made on the appeal.

The “I Believe I Can Fly” singer was convicted in New York in 2022. In 2023 he received a 20-year prison sentence in Chicago for similar offenses – but the judge ruled that the ex-pop star could largely serve the prison sentences in parallel. The musician, born Robert Sylvester Kelly in Chicago, was once one of the most successful musicians of his generation, with more than 50 million albums sold and various important awards. However, there have been allegations of sexual abuse against him since the 1990s.
