It’s only a few seconds that a man captured on his cell phone, and yet the short video of Prince William and Princess Kate shopping moves people’s minds. You can see the heir to the throne and his wife, happy and cheerful after the weekend shopping. They both carry bags and walk quickly. The recordings were first published by the British newspaper “The Sun” and the US gossip portal “TMZ”.
Prince William and Princess Kate: New video could stop theories
For a few weeks now, the most absurd theories have been circulating online about the whereabouts of the princess, who had to undergo abdominal surgery in January and will not have any official engagements until after Easter. Much of the fuss, however, is due to the palace’s inability to communicate. Because that was ultimately responsible for the photo mishap turning into a PR disaster.
And so, despite the video, many unanswered questions remain. Probably the most pressing of all: Why was the Mother’s Day photo of Kate with the three children so badly changed, even manipulated, that several photo agencies withdrew it? More than ten parts of the picture are considered questionable. Just a few days ago, photographer Pete Souza, who accompanied former President Barack Obama for years, explained why the subsequent interventions were more than “just Photoshop.” Every professional photographer uses Photoshop. “Basically, the accepted methods allow a news photo to be customized by adjusting color balance, density (making the raw file lighter or darker), and shadows and highlights,” says Souza. “What is not acceptable: removing, adding or changing elements in the photo. That would change the content,” he explained.
Photoshop glitch still not resolved
After it emerged how many alleged changes could be seen in the Kate photo, fans online and journalists around the world demanded clarification. Kate herself apologized a day later, saying that as an amateur photographer she sometimes tries to edit images. The princess said she was sorry for any confusion.
It’s hard to believe that Kate made such a simple mistake, after all, she is more than just an amateur photographer. For years she has been regularly taking pictures that the palace publishes. Even at university, the princess concentrated on photography and wrote her bachelor’s thesis on art. She was also in the photography club at the renowned St. Andrews University. Since 2019, Kate has been a patron of the Royal Photographic Society. In 2021 she was also the editor of the illustrated book “Hold Still”.
It seemed a bit as if the princess had to be used as a scapegoat for a mistake that others actually made. The palace could have answered many questions if it had released the original, unedited image. But he didn’t want that, and so the scandal remains unexplained.
What also remains: the realization that the royals’ public relations work can at least be improved.
