A girl who almost paid for her cause with her life

A girl who almost paid for her cause with her life

Malala Yousafzai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014. The background to this was her life-threatening demeanor for access to education for women in Pakistan. In 2012, Taliban terrorists shot her in the head because of this. The girl survived seriously injured.

The British author Nick Wood has written a drama for an actor entitled “Malala – Mädchen mit Buch”, which premiered yesterday as a live stream via the Landestheater’s Netzbühne.

Friedrich Eidenberger plays an author who wants to write Malala Yousafzai’s story, but is plagued by writer’s block. He asks questions (also to the audience), he reenacts situations, he researches with empathy – this is how he wants to find access to the incomprehensible. Eidenberger does it well, alone his means are limited. That is also the big flaw in this production. The protagonist is looking for conversation, verbal interaction via camera with the audience, but he can’t get away with it. The hurdle is too big; the request to look for answers together – for example to a school class participating via Zoom – fizzles out in the middle of nowhere, under the protection of the camera-off. For the introduction, too, one would like more esprit and a short, concise introduction to the piece.
