Immediately after his first Oscar for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy is determined to reprise his leading role in Peaky Blinders from BBC/Netflix for a film that will begin filming in September, according to the creator of the series Steven Knight.

Knight revealed the news in conversation with Birmingham World at the premiere of The Town, his new drama series for the BBC. “He’ll definitely come back for it,” she said of Murphy. “We’re filming it in September, just down the road in Digbeth [Inglaterra]”.


Peaky Blinders, which originally aired on BBC Two before moving to BBC One and eventually Netflix, where it exploded in popularity, takes its name from the Birmingham gang whose exploits it chronicles after the First World War. Murphy directed the popular British crime drama. series as gang leader Tommy Shelby, and the show will run for six seasons between 2013 and 2022.

Over the years, and even recently, Murphy has consistently expressed his willingness to return for a Peaky Blinders film if the script was right, and Knight also shared his interest and intention in pursuing such a project. “I know exactly what the movie is about. And I know which two stories he is going to tell”, he shared in a 2022 interview with Esquire. “What happens after that, I want it to depend on the movie. For all we know, someone is going to show up, I think I know who it will be.”
While Shelby was once perhaps Murphy’s most iconic role, she’s coming off a career high point with the historical epic Oppenheimer of Christopher Nolan for Universal, in which he played the theoretical physicist behind the atomic bomb. For his work in the star drama, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, as well as a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and many other awards.
