Prince Albert II takes a stand on the real estate affair

The notes from Prince Albert II’s long-time asset manager, Claude Palmero, have been causing a real scandal in Monaco for several weeks. Now Albert has commented on it himself.

It is a veritable scandal that has plagued the tiny Principality of Monaco for several weeks. For years, Claude Palmero was the asset manager of Prince Albert II and his family clan until he was fired by Albert in the summer of 2023. But it wasn’t just a professional end, Albert also made allegations against Palmero and reported him for corruption. Palmero’s revenge followed promptly. He handed his notes to journalists, who in turn published what the royal family would have preferred to keep under wraps.

There is talk of dubious real estate projects and of a blurring line between taxable expenses and expenses. Palmero also said that the prince had invested around $250 million of his billion-dollar fortune in offshore accounts.

In the “Paris Match” Prince Albert II takes a stand against Palmero again. “It’s never easy to feel betrayed by people you initially trusted and who, upon closer inspection, you realize didn’t do their job well,” he says of his former asset manager, whose father already worked for Albert’s father Rainier had worked. And Albert II suggested that Palmero’s dismissal could have been carried out easily. “If someone doesn’t agree to being offered the opportunity to retire in peace, and then this disappointed person comes into your office and threatens you, it’s very unpleasant on a human level,” he says.

Palmero insists on his position. He wants to clear his name and, if necessary, even take him to the European Court of Human Rights. His accusation: The judiciary in Monaco is not independent, Albert II has great influence and is therefore untouchable. The prince sees it relatively calmly. “It’s not the first ordeal I’ve been through and there will be more,” he told Paris Match.
