Christina Applegate regrets not being honest about her feelings

At the age of 36, Christina Applegate was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a mastectomy. She survived the illness. In a podcast, Applegate now reveals what happened to her back then – and how it affects her everyday life with MS.

Christina Applegate recently caused emotional reactions with her appearance at the Emmy Awards. The actress went on stage with a walking stick, marked by her battle with the nervous disease multiple sclerosis. This is not the first time that Applegate has suffered from health problems.

Christina Applegate on her breast cancer diagnosis

In 2008, at just 36 years old, the “Dead to Me” actress received the devastating diagnosis of breast cancer. In Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, the now 52-year-old said that she regrets not having spoken openly about the dark side at the time. Applegate had a mastectomy, meaning her breasts were surgically removed. “When I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 36, I went out on the street and was the good girl talking about ‘Oh, I love my new breasts,’ which were all scarred and broken. What was I thinking?” she said on the podcast.

She wasn’t honest when she talked about her condition back then. “My first interview was with Robin Roberts when I had cancer, and I sat there and lied my ass off about how I felt,” Applegate said. At that time she founded a foundation and raised millions of dollars. She also drew attention to the importance of preventive examinations. “But in the background I was taking off my bra and crying every night. And I wish I had said that,” she said.

She is open about her feelings about MS

In her own new podcast with “Sopranos” star Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Applegate speaks openly, honestly and bluntly about her current battle with the nervous disease MS. Sigler also suffers from MS and has been raising public awareness of the hardships that those affected go through for several years.

In an interview with “Good Morning America,” the two women talked about their lives with MS, which are currently very different. While Sigler has known about her diagnosis for several years and seems to have found a way to deal with it, Applegate deals with it differently. She openly described her life with the symptoms as “hell” and admitted that she currently prefers to isolate herself rather than go out among people.

The interview for the US broadcast was conducted by Robin Roberts of all people – the woman who had already spoken to Applegate about her breast cancer and with whom the actress was not honest at the time.
