How to live – a girl’s magic

There are children’s books that are so clairvoyant that they even become topical over the years. “Momo”, the fairy tale novel by Michael Ende, published in 1973, is one of them. The story about this wondrous girl who can listen wonderfully, thus wasting time and opening people’s hearts, filmed in 1986 with Radost Bokel in the title role, celebrated an impressive premiere on Saturday in the stage version by Henry Mason in the Children’s Theater in Linz.

Katharina Schraml, directed by Julia Ribbeck, equips her Momo with an unattended magic that not only seduces the villagers Beppo Straßenkehrer (Matthias Hacker), Bella Capelli (Simone Neumayr) and Nino Cantina (David Baldessari), but also the audience in no time at all of all ages. Isabella Reder’s stage is a cleverly built wonder box.

The colorful group chats with each other, celebrates parties and passionately goes about their work. Life is easy these days, until the gray men from the time savings bank show up with their deceptive promises. For their own benefit, they hand out tips on how to save time. If you think of smartphones and tablet computers here, you are not so wrong. Stress is rampant, all of a sudden only what counts economically. With the help of the magical turtle Kassiopeia, Momo manages to decipher the business of the Gray Men and put them to flight. A bravo for everyone involved. (pg)
