While two strong pillars of the British royal family, Kate and Charles, are currently weakened by cancer, Prince William and Queen Camilla are holding the flag high for the Royal Family. You try to complete and accommodate all upcoming appointments despite personal problems.
This is also the case on Maundy Thursday, when the Maundy service takes place every year. The Maundy service dates back to 600 AD. Once a year, the reigning monarch distributes as many special coins as his own age to people who have performed extraordinary Christian service for their community.
Queen Camilla awarded two coins to each of the chosen ones
The recipients of the coins receive two pieces each, one smaller and one larger, each in a leather case in red and white. The shape of the coins has not changed since 1670. However, the motif changes with the reigning king; a portrait of King Charles is now emblazoned on the award.
The coins were distributed in London until the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II. But the mother of the reigning King Charles felt this was unfair and created the tradition of the coins being awarded annually in a different community.
In 2023 people were honored in York, this year the ceremony took place in Worcester. According to the official homepage of the royal family “Royal”, Elizabeth II is said to have visited every cathedral in the country during her 70-year reign. A tradition that will continue after her.
This year Queen Camilla awarded the special coins. The monarch appeared in the community in a visibly good mood and perfectly styled and even took the time to chat with waiting fans. A little girl was also allowed to get very close to the Queen and talk to her – the 76-year-old bent down especially for the little one.
