Easter service: Why King Charles and Camilla sent a sign of hope

Charles was heir to the throne for 59 years until he took over the role of king from his late mother Elizabeth II in autumn 2022. Just over a year after taking office, the shock came: King Charles had cancer. The head of the British crown is currently fighting the insidious disease and hardly ever attends public appointments – but he didn’t want to miss the Easter service.

On Easter Sunday, the British royal family gathers at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle for the traditional Easter service. This year, Prince William and his wife Kate, who also had cancer, and their three children canceled their participation. The news is too fresh that the princess is also seriously ill and the chemotherapy has just begun. Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara Tindall, and her family were also missing; she was taking part in an equestrian event.

The small royal circle around King Charles was in a good mood at the Easter service

The shrunken royal family was still in a good mood at the service on Sunday. In addition to King Charles and Camilla, Prince Andrew with his ex-wife Fergie, Prince Edward with his wife Sophie and son James and Princess Anne with her husband Sir Timothy Laurence were also there.

Apparently the ladies had agreed in advance of the event; with the exception of Duchess Sophie, they all wore green. The color green stands for hope and the royal family can use a lot of it at the moment. It’s hard to imagine that the choice of clothing was a coincidence when three of the four royal ladies present were wearing green. In addition to King Charles and Princess Kate, Sarah Ferguson, Prince Andrew’s ex-wife, is also suffering from cancer, skin cancer in her case, but it is said not to have spread.
