People: Dagtekin: Possible to achieve something as a child of migrants

Successful director Bora Dagtekin supports the criticism of his colleague İlker Çatak, who complained about ignorance and exclusion due to his Turkish name.

The successful film director Bora Dagtekin understands his colleague Ilker Çatak’s criticism that there is ignorance and exclusion in Germany, for example when his name is hardly mentioned or is misspelled.

“I think it’s good that İlker Çatak said that. What he means by that, and what he might ultimately be talking about, is that perhaps more people with names that don’t sound quite German at first glance, but who are still German are, can inspire other people,” said Dagtekin (45) to “Bild”.

A few weeks ago, the director Çatak (40), who was nominated for an Oscar for the film “The Teacher’s Room”, sparked a debate about how the media had treated him and attributed this to his Turkish name.

“Hey, I could do it too…”

“If İlker had been mentioned in every report about the Oscars, a lot more people with similar names could have concluded, ‘Hey, I could do that too…'” Dagtekin said. “And those who are more noticed can change the world more. The message is: It is possible to achieve something as a migrant child.” That’s the feeling it’s all about, emphasized Dagtekin (alternative spelling: Dağtekin).

The 45-year-old brought, among other things, the successful “Fack ju Göhte” films to the cinema and has just had the most successful cinema release of the year in Germany so far with the comedy “Chantal in Fairytale Land” with Jella Haase in the leading role.
