Tom Brady cracked jokes about Donald Trump at a White House ceremony. For a long time, the football star was said to have a good relationship with the ex-president.
Tom Brady and US President Joe Biden looked like old friends in the White House on Tuesday when Biden invited the Super Bowl winning team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to join them. And Brady let himself be carried away with a little swipe at Donald Trump in his speech.
Tom Brady jokes about Trump with Joe Biden
“Not many would have thought we could win,” said the 43-year-old superstar. “In fact, I think about 40 percent of people still don’t believe we won,” he said jokingly, to which Biden replied, “I can relate.” A clear allusion to Trump and his fans who did not want to admit the electoral defeat.
Brady also said, “We had a game in Chicago that I forgot which section we were in. I lost my thread for a moment in 21 years I’ve been playing and they called me ‘Sleepy Tom’ . Why would you do this to me? ” This is also an allusion, after all, Trump nicknamed Biden “Sleepy Joe” during the election campaign.
It’s spicy that the football star is so obviously handing out against Trump. Because the two are linked by a friendship.
Brady and the “MAGA” cap
In fact, there was a Make America Great Again cap in Brady’s locker room during Trump’s 2015 campaign. One of the reasons Brady was hated by many Americans.
His explanation seemed a bit awkward at the time. “He always calls me and gives me motivating speeches. Now that he is running for the office of president, he has sent me a cap. (…) This is how it found its way into my locker,” he said.
And he explained that his friendship with the ex-reality star dates back to 2002, when he appeared as a jury member in one of Trump’s beauty pageants. “I mean, it’s pretty amazing what he could achieve,” Brady said at the time. “He obviously speaks to a lot of people and is a hell of a lot of fun playing golf with him.”
Almost six years and Trump’s presidency later, there is – it seems – not much left of the friendship.
