The unprecedented XXL holiday weekend caused a sharp increase in theater attendance with no less than 46% more public than in 2023 although there were also more days. It is worth remembering that Easter this year fell in March and the April holidays were added and that last year this connection did not exist.
While between January and February there were 30% fewer audiences in theaters compared to the same months in 2023, in March there was an improvement since the drop was 14% less compared to last year. These are still relative figures considering that last year in the summer there was the unusual boom of “Married with Children.”
This weekend XXL recorded a notable increase in extra features in most of the titles on the commercial circuit, plus some strong shows that premiered these days, attached to the city’s already powerful billboard, such as the cases of Imanol Arias and Mercedes Moránthe presentation of “Legally Blonde” or the return of the successful Martin Bossi.
It is interesting to observe the fluctuations in the price range of theater seats in the commercial circuit, with a wide range of shows, promotions and locations in the theaters. Tickets range from $10,000 to $29,000 in a diverse range. It is evident that the minimum price of the commercial is equal to that of the independent theater ticket, however, on average the commercial continues to cost twice as much.
Carlos Rottemberg He told Ámbito: “50 years ago the independent theater charged an entrance fee similar to that of the official one, which was equivalent to 10% compared to that of the commercial one. Today the difference in costs united the points, we have to calculate an average of 4 to 1, even based on how much the real estate and the investment are worth to just do theater. It is a situation that comes from before and that is why the independent theater needs permanent support from the State to continue subsisting, something that differentiates it from commercial theater or as I like to call it, business theater that is supported by ticket revenue.”
Rottenberg admits that it measures the price of the ticket “millimetrically” according to the public’s pocket, after the good performance of the friendly prices in Mar del Plata. The theater was the only activity of a summer with a decrease in tourism that ended up being above 33% in ticket sales compared to last year. All commercial and service activities were below the previous one. That’s why the mayor gave Rottemberg a giant entry in the Estrella de Mar.
“I am pushing the price as much as possible to reach the critical mass of viewers on the commercial circuit. The best location in my theaters does not exceed 18 thousand pesos and hence the pomotions and the Buenos Aires Tickets with tickets at half price,” he is honest. Rottemberg. And he anticipates: “School of Rock” at the Gran Rex will have tickets for 10 thousand pesos, like “Legally Blonde”, our recently released musical.”
Mariano Stolkiner of “Abroad”, expressed: “We noticed a substantial gap between operating costs and sales values. This makes it very difficult to take risks when programming, even in cases of works that fill the room, they are the fewest, the numbers do not close, but at the same time if the ticket prices go up, people will not can pay them, so this start of the year is complicated.”
In Alley Space They point out that the audience attendance fell, and that what hits the hardest is the increase in lighting, added to the fact that the subsidies for the theaters have not yet entered. “It’s weaker than other years, the public has dropped and the works that were coming more or less have ended up sinking, on the other hand, the ones that are doing well continue to be called because the public wants to see them,” he said. Federico Busofrom the Alley.
