“The first prophecy” hits theaters this Thursday as a prequel to 20th Century Studios’ classic horror franchise “The prophecy”.
Released in theaters in 1976, Damien’s iconic story inaugurated a chilling journey that today, 48 years later, incorporates a new chapter focused on Margaret (Nell Tiger Free), a young American woman who is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the Church.
The film directed by Arkasha Stevenson expands the universe of the franchise with an origin story that seeks to provide answers to how this story came about and who the other people behind Damien are. The greatest success of the film lies in the latter, the way in which it presents the connection with the film directed by Richard Donner It occurs naturally and does not fall into the mistake of many prequels of contradicting future events.
Although the horror elements are present (some predictable), the film and its setting (Italy in 1971) give way to a setting conducive to a thriller with psychological overtones. Margaret embodies the modern public’s changing relationship with the church. At first she approaches her faith with her sincerity, only to discover a complete perversion of her values by the institution’s supposed authority figures.
Another of the strong points is the performance of Nell Tiger Free in the leading role and cast made up of Ralph Inesonwho appears as Father Brennan, a character from the 1976 original, who is excommunicated and tries to warn Margaret about some strange circumstances and dangerous events happening there. Bill Nighy stands out as the powerful Cardinal Lawrence, who at one time was the priest of the orphanage and the veteran Brazilian star Sonia Braga she plays Sister Silva, the abbess of the orphanage.
