Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’ breaks box office record in China

Miyazaki’s masterpiece set a new record Thursday as the largest single-day performance ever by a non-Chinese animated film.

The Oscar-winning film from the master of Japanese anime Hayao Miyazaki, “The Boy and the Heron”has taken off at the Chinese box office significantly.

Studio Ghibli’s enigmatic hit opened in China on Wednesday and soared to $13.7 million (RMB 99.1 million), displacing Warner Bros. and previous box office champion Legendary Entertainment, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empirewhich raised $5.2 million on the day according to data from regional consulting firm Artisan Gateway.

Miyazaki’s masterpiece set a new record on Thursday as the biggest single-day performance ever by a non-Chinese animated film, grossing $23.7 million (RMB 171.5 million). Frozen 2 by Disney Animation held the previous record with RMB 167.6 million in ticket sales as of November 23, 2019.

The success of anime in China

“The Boy and the Heron” It premiered in Japan in July 2023, earning $61 million to date. That means China will soon become the world’s largest single market for the film.

Since the pandemic, Japanese anime has arguably supplanted big Hollywood movies as Chinese moviegoers’ favorite international film category. Last year’s hit anime Suzume of Makoto Shinkai raised 114 million dollars and The First Slam Dunk from Toei Animation raised $93 million. Only Fast Xfrom Universal, grossed the most that year ($138.7 million), while the rest of the American studio releases fell far behind.
