Martha Argerich warned about the interruption of musical scholarships by the Government

The renowned pianist Martha Argerich denounced that the government of Javier Milei He ordered the interruption of the scholarships that bear his name and are intended for members of children’s and youth orchestras to develop as music teachers. “If the State does not support and contribute to culture, the future is really dangerous”he remarked.

“The work they have done is very important and a number of teachers are training them with undoubted seriousness, dedication and a lot of love. In this way they are depriving young people of the opportunity to have a bright musical future,” Argerich lamented through a letter with his signature that he distributed.

I myself have received support from the Argentine State when I was young, and that was fundamental for my training and subsequent artistic career.. I deeply regret that now many are left without that possibility,” recalled the successful performer who 70 years ago went to Europe to deepen her studies.

The Martha Argerich Scholarships They were part of a program of what was the Ministry of Culture of the Nation for young people between 18 and 26 years old. Its objective was to promote training in the fundamental aspects for performance as teachers in orchestras of the same type, through two mechanisms: participation in workshops that addressed the essential pedagogical and musical aspects or in an orchestra made up of those who had access.

In March 2021 the Master Rolando Goldman He proposed to me, with the collaboration of Eduardo Hubert, create the Scholarships that bear my name (Martha Argerich Scholarships), within the scope of the Ministry of Culture of the Argentine Nation. It seemed like a good idea to me with the purpose of helping young musicians from the Children’s and Youth Orchestras of popular neighborhoods so that they could do intensive training with their musical instruments.

From that moment on, 35 young people were chosen by a jury of recognized figures in our country. Some of the students of the First Biannual Martha Argerich Scholarship were later hired and became Professors of the Orchestras. In this way, they were able to transmit what they learned to other young people. And it changed their lives in terms of their future, in a noticeable way.

In 2023, a new group of 40 young people from all over the country joined the Scholarships. The work they have done is very important, and a number of teachers are training them with undoubted seriousness, dedication and a lot of love.

Unfortunately, the national government authorities of my country They decided to interrupt the Scholarships (which should have started in February of this year) and fired those, and other teachers of the Children’s Orchestras. In this way they are depriving young people of the opportunity to have a bright musical future.

I myself have received support from the Argentine State when I was young, and that was fundamental for my training and subsequent artistic career.

If the State does not support and contribute to culture, the future is really dangerous.

I deeply regret that many are now left without that possibility. I know that they are also removing support from numerous cultural spaces. If culture is not supported, the future of children and young people, and of the entire people, is in danger.

I trust that the authorities will think again about continuing these programs in some way.
