The history of Ciudacita, the Inca town of Tucumán
Ciudacita, originally called “Kalasasaya” by the Incas, was founded in the 17th century in the current province of Tucumán, with the intention of establishing a functional city that could supply the Incas with the natural resources of the area and maintain a relationship with the inhabitants of the nearby plains.
It was located on the edge of a mountain and It was inhabited by families until the second Calchaquí war, which caused its massive abandonment. Although it was never attacked by the Spanish, the constructions of Ciudacita collapsed over time, the presence of animals and the climate.
It was rediscovered in 1949 by Professor Enrique Würschmid, revealing its location and history, formerly known as “Old Town” by the locals. Currently, the ruins of Ciudacita are located within the Aconquija National Park.

Although the main buildings were naturally demolished over time, in this beautiful Tucumán archaeological site you can enjoy a series of buildings that are still standing.
- Walk through the old houses, built with grayish flagstones, and through the pircas, which are one meter high.
- Visit the “Ceremonial Enclosure or Kalasasaya” and group of “Los Corrales”, the two main sectors into which the Incas had divided the town.

How to get to the Ciudacita, Inca town of Tucumán
Little town is located 107 kilometers from San Miguel de Tucumán and to get there you have to drive along RN38 and then connect with RP326, until Concepción. There take the RP32 to your destination. It takes about an hour and a half.
