In the new biopic “Back to Black” about Amy Winehouse, her fatal relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil plays a central role. Friends of the late singer criticized Fielder-Civil’s portrayal – who is now defending himself.
It was the beginning of her downfall: When Amy Winehouse met her future husband Blake Fielder-Civil, he had already had his first experience with hard drugs. The young singer fell in love with Fielder-Civil – a fatal love story began, which is now being examined in more detail in the new biopic “Back to Black”.
Director Sam Taylor-Johnson took Winehouse’s life as a subject, particularly the production of her legendary hit album “Back to Black”. In it, Winehouse dealt with her turbulent marriage to her husband in the noughties, which was marked by drugs and escapades.
Amy Winehouse: Ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil comments on the biopic
For many people, Fielder-Civil is an enemy. After the premiere of “Back to Black,” friends of the late singer expressed disapproval of the film’s portrayal of the drug addict. He is portrayed “like a Disney prince,” according to the accusation. Fielder-Civil spoke on English breakfast television about his relationship with Winehouse, who died of alcohol poisoning at the age of 27.
“I don’t talk about it often, but I felt like for quite a long time I did nothing but try to take responsibility – it was a cross I had to bear,” he said. In 2013, he admitted to introducing Winehouse to heroin. A drug he was already addicted to at the time. “I’ve received death threats online and on social media – Amy inspires a fierce, dedicated fan base,” said Fielder-Civil.
Of course, he now regrets introducing Winehouse to heroin, a “terrible, terrible drug.” But he also says: “I was addicted too. It’s not as black and white as you think. I was a very, very young person and I thought I had all the answers.”
He himself believes that the film adaptation of his character was successful. “In a way it was almost therapeutic – I saw a more accurate depiction of the relationship,” he said of the film. His relationship with the singer consisted of more than drugs. They loved each other, said Fielder-Civil. He also believes Winehouse would want him and her father Mitch to get along.
