The freestyle hit “Sunshine” in “The Voice of Germany” by Mark Forster and Nico Santos emerged from that moment at the end of 2020. Fans have long wanted an official version of the song – the singers have now made this wish come true.
Actually, the coaches on “The Voice of Germany” were just kidding: In the second episode of the tenth season, Mark Forster asked himself how to actually write a hit song. Fortunately, Nico Santos was also on the jury in 2020, because he had experience with it. Santos has already written a few songs for pop star Helene Fischer.
Instead of Santos’ explanation of which beat they undercut, they make the Schlager construction kit audible. The song “Sunshine” emerges from the spontaneous freestyle and within less than three minutes. Now Santos and Forster have recorded the song together – at the request of Forster’s fans.
Reply to direct messages – with wit
Mark Forster introduced the format on June 15th on his Instagram and TikTok account: “DM Tuesday”. This is a weekly format in which the singer replies to private messages on Instagram – also known as Direct Messages (DM). In the short videos he makes phone calls to familiar faces like investor Frank Thelen, sings birthday serenades and occasionally pokes his followers. In the premiere of the Forster format, the singer and colleague VIZE turned an English direct message into a song and recorded it spontaneously.
Colleagues like Yvonne Catterfeld, Kelvin Jones and soccer player Jean Zimmer (1. FC Kaiserslautern) have also appeared in Mark Forster’s short videos. Forster sang a declaration of non-love into the camera and played his fans the songs of a kindergarten group that sang his song “194 countries”. The singer shares the short videos on Instagram and TikTok.
Every third message
“Hello and a warm welcome to DM-Tuesday! A DM has been following me for months. Namely: Every third DM asks me if I could record the song ‘Sunshine’ with Nico Santos”, the current short video begins. Forster looks at the camera. A screenshot of a DM fills the entire background on a green screen. “This is a hit that we freestyled on ‘The Voice'”, the singer continues.
“Schlager and Nico Santos – I won’t do that. I won’t do that,” Mark Forster taps his forehead with his hand. Then suddenly Nico Santos appears in the picture. While Mark Forster continues to deny wanting to do that, Nico Santos pushes a silver jacket into his hand and whispers “Come on now!” Music is already playing in the background.

After Santos disappears from the picture and Forster looks down in resignation, a music video begins. In the living room at the piano, in the backyard by the flower bush, in the hallway with the guitar and in front of changing images of the sun and flowers: Nico Santos and Mark Forster perform their hit song “Sunshine” together.
Santos and Forster sing the hit into the camera theatrically and with exaggerated enthusiasm. Slightly exaggerated and with a wink, the two singers comply with the fans’ wishes. On TikTok, the video already received more than 1.1 million views in less than 24 hours. The stars are celebrated on Instagram for this fun. In the comments you can even find the wish for the catchy tune on Spotify.
