“Biracial. Bilingual. I was a synthesis of incompatibilities, so what did I do?” The Captain of Hoa Xuande he says at the beginning of the trailer, over scenes from his spy work. “Saigon 1975. I was a two-faced man. The war was ending and I was looking forward to my new assignment.”


When his supervisor, played by Downey, shows up in Vietnam, he tells the Captain that his next job for the CIA will be in the United States. “By the time I’m done with you, you’ll be able to mix it up with the Harvard rowing team,” Downey tells him.
As the two and a half minute trailer progresses, it is shown that the spy may actually be a double agent, who actually works for the Viet Cong and is sent to the United States to be a mole for his home country.

“is an espionage thriller and cross-cultural satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he discovers that his days of espionage have not finished,” indicates the official synopsis.
Sandra Oh, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen and Alan Trong complete the cast of The Sympathizer, co-created by Park Chan-wook and Don McKellarwho also serve as executive producers.
Downey’s role marks his first since he won the Oscar for best supporting actor for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer of Christopher Nolan.
The Sympathizer premiered last night on Max and HBO and will add an episode every Sunday starting at 9 p.m.
