The Duke of Sussex was stripped of his right to police protection after stepping down from royal duties in 2020. Prince Harry, on the other hand, went to court, but so far without success.
After his duties as an active royal ended, the Duke of Sussex lost his taxpayer-paid police protection. Prince Harry never wanted to accept that. He argued that the danger to his family remained even after he left. He had little success with this in court. In a document signed last week, Judge Sir Peter Lane dismissed Harry’s appeal: “There are no ‘other compelling reasons’ for an appeal to be heard.”
Despite the negative decision, the Duke’s legal team is now expected to take the case straight to the Court of Appeal. Prince Harry sought a judicial review of the decision to remove his right to police protection in Britain after he stepped down from his royal duties. He lost the case in February.
Discount for Prince Harry
Now it’s also about money. The case, including the costs of his own lawyers and those of the Interior Ministry, is now said to have cost a million. At least the prince was able to achieve a partial victory here. Because documents were made available to him late, he was granted a “discount” on legal fees of 10 percent. Prince Harry wanted a halving. But the judge rejected his request to halve, saying the Duke of Sussex had “completely lost” his case.
“I have no doubt that the plaintiff’s contention that his liability for costs should be subject to a 50 to 60 percent reduction is untenable.” The Duke’s claim that his case was “partially successful” is unfounded. This involved documents about Ravec’s work. A committee of representatives from the Home Office, the Metropolitan Police and the Royal Household, which oversees security arrangements for the Royal Family.
No automatic protection for Prince Harry
Harry and his wife, the former US actress Meghan Markle, withdrew from their royal duties in 2020. The British authorities had decided to only decide on police protection for Prince Harry and his family on a case-by-case basis and no longer grant it in principle.
Harry told a court hearing in December that security concerns stopped him from traveling to Britain. “The United Kingdom is my home. The United Kingdom is central to my children’s heritage,” Prince Harry said in a written statement read out in court. However, he cannot visit Great Britain with his family “if it is not possible to protect them.”
