Why Netflix was able to release Sex and the City
The entry of HBO content to Netflix already has precedents. It is part of a mutually beneficial strategy, like the titles of Insecure, Blood Brothers, The Pacific, Six Feet Under, Ballers and True Blood.
The entertainment company led by Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters is the company with the largest market share in the streaming and on-demand viewing industry. It is stated that Netflix reached 260 million subscribers towards the end of 2023, with an increase of 13 million users in the last quarter of that year.
What Sex and the City is about
Created by Darren Star, as a loose adaptation of Candace Bushnell’s literary anthology, Sex and the City transcended television history. It spread through six seasons broadcast from 1998 to 2004.
Disruptive, daring and pioneering in the nineties by representing female independence and sexuality, the series stood out for addressing themes of friendship and autonomy. With the anecdotes of her characters, she opened the debate on what it meant to be a woman and the social expectations that are associated with women.
Sarah Jessica Parker gave life to Carrie Bradshaw, an American columnist who finds inspiration for her texts in the love experiences of her friends or in interactions with her own suitors. The quartet was completed by lawyer Miranda Hobbs (Nixon), romantic art dealer Charlotte York (Davis) and public relations specialist Samantha Jones (Cattrall).
Not the entire franchise has been included in the licensing agreement signed by Warner and Netflix. For now, the films in the Sex and the City universe and the spin-off series And Just Like That will still be exclusively distributed in streaming by Max.
