“Reunion”: how the Benzacar gallery broke the pandemic

The artists of the 90s set a milestone. Although not all of them are there, the first exhibition of the group that emerged from the Rojas Cultural Center was carried out by Benzacar. And there are still Sebastián Gordín and Fabio Kacero with “Snow outdoor”, a scenographic drums covered by a snowfall. There is a painting by Pablo Siquier, a member of Grupo de la X, like Ernesto Ballesteros and Ana Gallardo that shows the intimacy of a manuscript, which can be seen from afar. In black and white it exhibits the features of Buenos Aires Art Deco, forms that intersect with the derivations of other styles of modernity. On the side of the 90s, the conceptualism of Jorge Macchi appears. And a cloth brings the memory of the floor rags that, as humble objects, presented in 1991 at the Banco Patricios Foundation.

Ruth Benzacar left a legacy to new generations, her daughter Orly, and her granddaughter, Mora Bacal, inherited her gaze and selective criteria. With the strategic “Curriculum Zero” award, they were able to discover emerging artists such as Adrián Villar Rojas, Flavia Da Rin or Jazmín López. They are joined by the incorporations of Tomás Saraceno, Leandro Erlich and Eduardo Basualdo; as well as artists with personal and incomparable styles such as Luciana Lamothe, Marina De Caro, Catalina León, Carlos Herrera, Carlos Huffmann, Daniel Joglar, Mariana Telleria, Max Gómez Canle, Chiachio & Giannone, Julio Grinblatt, Tomás Maglione, Florencia Rodríguez Giles, Miguel Rothschild and Guillermo Iuso, among others.

A tour of the gallery reveals perhaps the most remarkable condition: the aesthetic diversity of our art and a certain preference for conceptualism. Each week, in two adjoining rooms, the participants of this “Meeting” present brief individual samples. Currently there are the games with the invisibility of Ballesteros and the magic of Erlich, then Saraceno and Liliana Porter continue.
