The dispute between actor Hugh Grant and the British publisher News Group Newspapers over illegal information gathering has been resolved. A similar lawsuit from Prince Harry is still open.
The British actor Hugh Grant has agreed to a settlement in court with the publisher of the tabloid “The Sun” in the wiretapping scandal. The British news agency PA reported this from the courtroom in London.
In addition to the 63-year-old actor, Prince Harry (39) also filed a lawsuit against the publisher News Group Newspapers (NGN). The various cases involve, among other things, telephone tapping, burglary and other types of illegal information gathering. The publisher categorically denies the allegations in connection with the “Sun”.
Grant wants to donate money from settlement to activists
In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Grant explained the decision that had now been made. The actor said he regretted that the trial did not take place. “I would like to have all of these allegations, which you deny, tested in court,” he wrote.
The background, however, is that even if he wins the case, he could still be stuck with the legal fees of both sides of around ten million pounds (the equivalent of a good 11.7 million euros). He therefore only reluctantly accepts the money from the settlement and announces that he will make it available to activists who have set themselves the goal of exposing the excesses of the tabloid media.
Grant has long denounced the illegal information gathering methods once common in the British tabloid media. He settled a lawsuit filed by Grant against NGN over the now discontinued weekly newspaper “News of the World” in 2012. Prince Harry’s lawsuit is scheduled to be heard in court in January 2025.
