Autumn romances with the always current Stefania Sandrelli

“It’s never too late to love”, by Gianni Di Gregorio (also co-star), is the story of an unexpected love where one of the last stars of traditional Italian cinema shines again

She remains as pleasant, sweet and we would even say as attractive as always, Stefania Sandrelliand he’s already turning 78. And he’s still doing it comedies as kind, good-natured and simple as always, the also septuagenarian Gianni Di Gregorio. Here, as the international sales title suggests, They make up two people willing to live an autumnal love. It is never too late, and the joy is good, of course without pretensions.

We knew her as a girl, in titles like “Seduced and abandoned”, “Naked every night”, “I knew her well”and then in “Brancaleone to the Crusades” (delicious little witch in love), “The conformist”, “We had loved each other so much”in erotic like “The key”in his maturity with “The Family” and “People of Rome”He even filmed among us “Of love and shadow” and “Waiting for the Messiah”. She continues to act, but since 2010, with “The first beautiful thing”a film of his was not released here.

He, for his part, appeared in 2011, with a comedy that he had made three years before, “Pranzo de ferragosto”which was called here “A special holiday”, a nice story soaked in white wine where a peaceful neighbor must take care of four picturesque old ladies. That was his first work as a director, librettist and protagonist. He followed him “Gianni and the donne” (here, “The salt of life”), voluntarily more melancholic than picturesque, with Aylin Prandi, funny French daughter of a Roman and Buenos Aires. We missed the following, “Buoni a nulla” and “Lontano, lontano”, that is, good for nothing, and very far away. And luckily we meet him again now, in this friendly meeting with Sandrelli.

His character is Astolfo, a retired professor of distant origin who has lived for years in a rented apartment. The one he must leave because the owner’s daughter is getting married, and, as the saying goes, a married man wants a house. The professor has an option: return to his hometown, where he has part of the old family house. The problem is that it is a part, damp, run down and inhabited by a squatter. Will he have to throw him out? On the contrary, they become friends. Other friends join in, the kind that no one else wants, but that he kindly receives, and one of them gives him the opportunity to meet a pretty grandmother who will brighten his life.

We do not count more, only here everything is wrapped in soft joymemories appear like an Alfa Romeo Duetto and “Bread, love and fantasy” (that of the maresciallo destined for a small town where he discovers a beauty, with Vittorio De Sica and Gina Lollobrigida), and which was filmed in Artena, a typical small town on a hill with only two famous sons who were very contrasting, a cardinal and an anarchist. And maybe it’s never too late to love, but sometimes you let the days go by and when you want to remember, it’s already too late to watch a good movie.

“It is never too late to love” (Astulfo, Italy-France, 2022). Dir.: Gianni Di Gregorio. Stars: Gianni Di Gregorio, Stefania Sandrelli, Gigio Morra, Alberto Testone.
