In mid-March, actress Olivia Munn revealed that she had breast cancer and posted pictures from the hospital. Now she’s talking for the first time about how she felt after the double mastectomy.
Olivia Munn made her breast cancer diagnosis public in March with a detailed Instagram post. “In the last ten months I have had four operations,” she wrote on the photo platform. “I’ve been in bed more days than I can count. I’ve learned more about cancer, cancer treatments and hormones than I could have ever imagined,” Munn said.

Because the type of cancer she suffers from is particularly aggressive, Munn had a bilateral mastectomy. Both of her breasts were amputated. An intervention with strong consequences – especially on the psyche, as she now reveals in an interview with the US magazine “People”. “I really tried to prepare, but the truth is that nothing could prepare me for how I would feel, what it would look like, how I would deal with it emotionally. It was a lot harder than I expected,” says the actress.
She woke up in the hospital on May 24 last year after surgeons operated on her for ten hours. During the operation, the doctors found a carcinoma the size of a tangerine, said Munn. “This news gave me the confidence that I had made the right decision,” she says.
According to the actress, after the mastectomy she decided against immediate breast reconstruction because she wanted to let her body rest first. A follow-up appointment a week after the operation was shocking for her. “I saw myself for the first time and was in shock. It was incredibly hard,” she reveals. “It was a shock to my system. It was so difficult for me, I remember (…) looking in the mirror and just not having any emotions, just taking in what (the doctor) said,” he said the partner of comedian John Mulaney. Back home, she “just collapsed,” said Munn.
She finally had the reconstruction carried out last fall. Her body isn’t the same as it was before, Munn said, but that’s okay. Munn wants to use her story to educate people and encourage other women to go for checkups.
