Julian Nagelsmann: He will remain national coach after the home European Championships

The DFB has “good news”: Julian Nagelsmann extended his contract two months before the European Championship at home. He will remain national coach until 2026.

National coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) has extended his contract with the German Football Association (DFB). The German Football Association (DFB) announced this on Friday (April 19). Accordingly, the new contract with the 36-year-old runs until 2026. He will therefore also train the German national team for the next World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

“This is a decision of the heart,” Nagelsmann is quoted as saying. “It is a great honor to be able to coach the national team and work with the best players in the country.” In September 2023, Nagelsmann took over the position from Hansi Flick (59). His original contract would only have run until the end of the home European Championship in the summer.

DFB and fans are happy: “Julian is staying!”

Fans received the news positively. The DFB posted a short video there that shows Nagelsmann in various situations on and off the pitch. Then DFB sports director Rudi Völler (64) explains: “Yes, we made it clear to you. Julian is staying!”

The clip received more than 35,000 likes within an hour. The comments speak of an “absolutely sensible and correct decision”. Only a few Bayern fans are less euphoric. “We need you at Bayern,” it says something like this in more than one comment.

Return to FC Bayern off the table

Nagelsmann was recently considered the favorite for the coaching position at FC Bayern Munich. The record champions are still looking for a successor for Thomas Tuchel (50), who has to leave the club at the end of the season. Nagelsmann was recently considered the favorite for the position, which he had to hand over to Tuchel in March last year. The return to Munich is therefore off the table for the time being.

Under Nagelsmann, Germany won the last international matches against France and the Netherlands. Nagelsmann was moved by his enthusiasm. “Together we now want to play a successful home European Championship, we are all passionate about it,” said the national coach.

UEFA EURO 2024 starts on June 14th in Munich and the final will take place on July 14th in Berlin.
