Royal separation: Greek royal couple divorces

They no longer play a role as royals in Greece – the monarchy has been abolished there. Nevertheless, the divorce of Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana is making headlines.

Marriage over in the former Greek royal family: Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Denmark (54) and Princess Tatiana (43) are divorcing after almost 14 years of marriage. The family announced on their website on Friday afternoon that the decision was made by mutual consent. It was made “with great care and mutual respect” and reflects the deep appreciation for each other and for life together, it said. The couple celebrated their dream wedding on the Greek island of Spetses in 2010.

Greek media wrote of a “bomb” and a decision “out of the blue”. The family, on the other hand, emphasized good cooperation in their message and asked for respect for the couple’s privacy. The two’s future interaction will “continue to be guided by the same principles of respect and mutual understanding” and the relationship will be “based on a strong friendship.” Nikolaos and the Venezuelan-born Tatiana Blatnik want to continue living in Greece, in the country that they both called home. The two have no children.

Prince Nikolaos is the son of the last King of Greece, Constantine II, who died in January 2023, and his wife Anne-Marie of Denmark. The monarchy in Greece was abolished after a referendum in 1974.
