The story created by George RR Martin already has a spin-off series that aired “House of the Dragon”.
Brian Helgeland recognized by Oscar winner for writing “LA Confidential”directing the beloved 2001 comedy Heath Ledger “A Knight’s Tale” and write scripts for films like “Man on Fire” and “Mystic River”. He could also have included a series derived from “Game of Thrones” Yeah HBO would have gone ahead with his proposal, which was titled “10,000 Ships” and focused on Queen Nymeria.

“It turned out great, but I think they felt the period of my show was too far removed from the pillars of the original,” Helgeland recently told Inverse about his spinoff. “That’s why they haven’t picked it up yet, but nothing is ever dead. My script was based on Queen Nymeria and that little blurb about her that was in an encyclopedia of Westeros.”

What “10,000 Ships” would have been about
“Essentially, it was the story of Moses, but changing it to Nymeria”, he continued. “Their country is ruined and their people are forced to live on the water, that’s why the show was called ‘10,000 Ships’. They end up having to leave and find a new home, like the Israelites who left Egypt. She leads all these people, she tries to keep them all together, but things are always in danger of falling apart as they travel through a fictional version of the Mediterranean, looking for a new home to settle in.”
Helgeland’s participation in a spin-off of “Game of Thrones” was revealed as early as 2017, a few years before HBO’s flagship series ended. In May 2021, screenwriter Amanda Segel was hired as a writer for the series. But the show never got an official green light from HBO, although Helgeland maintains that “nothing is ever dead.”
“His life was nomadic. “Living in a united raft city, this big floating city,” Helgeland said of his plans for Nymeria and his people in the spin-off. “Sometimes the characters disembark, but are eventually driven from the land as they search for a home, their version of the promised land.”
“I met with George RR Martin to propose the idea, and he approved. “Unfortunately, I didn’t work with him more closely, but I would have if the show had continued,” he continued. “It was kind of like Ray Harryhausen’s Sinbad movies mixed with ‘The Odyssey.’ In a way, Nymeria is Odysseus, but instead of a crew of 12, he is responsible for all the citizens of this floating city-state. My work is still there if HBO wants to pick it up. I enjoyed the time I spent developing it and you never know”.
Other “Game of Thrones” spin-offs
“Game of Thrones” already has a spin-off series that aired thanks to “House of the Dragon”, which returns for a second season this summer. A second spin-off series, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight”recently announced its main cast members (Peter Claffey has been chosen as Dunk, while Dexter Sol Ansell has been cast as Egg) and is set to go into production later this year. A planned spin-off that is not moving forward is a “Thrones” sequel series focused on Jon Snow from Kit Harington.
