What to do in Mechongué, General Alvarado
The warm hospitality of the inhabitants of this town has led to Mechongué is recognized as “Pago Lindo” and obtain the title of National Capital of Friendship. Its charming streets and typical rural landscape make it the perfect place to clear your mind.
By exploring its picturesque corners, visitors can discover old period warehouses and the cozy Plaza Independencia, where the Church and grotto of Our Lady of Lourdesalong with the Cultural Center and the Municipal Delegation.
The story goes that the town’s name was established at the beginning of the 20th century, when rancher Martín de Alzaga decided to name the first local train station in honor of his daughter, Mercedes. The station was restored and still retains its original shape and colors.
Alzaga fought tirelessly for arrival of the railwaywhich finally became a reality on May 12, 1911. This event, along with the opening of the first shops, marked the beginning of the development and growth of the town.
How to get to Mechongué from Mar del Plata
To get to this rural town from La Feliz you must take route 88, at its junction with route 2. From there you must travel another 77 kilometers until you reach Camino 1, also known as the Route 88 – Mechongué link road.
