The trip to the Greek island is dreamy, but the movie not so much

From French director Marc Fitoussi comes this elementary, yet entertaining, comedy about two friends who after 20 years manage to complete a postponed excursion.

The year is 1989. Two teenage friends, the tall, thin and insipid Blandine and the short, lively and advantageous Magalie, dream of going to the Greek island Amorgos, where they were filmed. “Deep blue”. Reminder: “Deep blue” (Le grand bleu), by Luc Besson, where two great friends end up fighting, with Jean Reno and Jean-Marc Barrwho later came here to film “The plague”, by Luis Puenzo.

In 2019, Blandine remains the same and worse, now bitter because her husband changed her for a 20-year-old. To cheer her up, her son locates Magalie, arranges a dinner and later a trip for both of them to the island of their dreams. The detail is that, due to a supposed encouragement from their friend, instead of the luxury hotel in Amorgos that Blandine had reserved, they end up in the only pension on a bare island where only old archaeologists and young surfers stop by.

Young surfers! Magalie, who is a predator, is more than excited. There’s sun, beach, the Aegean Sea, drinks… and surfers. Blandine is still bitter, now doubly bitter. And since she is also very repressed, she does not know how to take advantage of the opportunity and hates her traveling companion.

Things begin to change when they later return to the itinerary and visit an English jeweler married to a Greek painter, a woman with the insight, we would say the wisdom, of years, who also lives in an enviable little house. And they continue to change when Blandine can understand that sometimes joy is also a defense to prevent the heaviness of sorrows, which otherwise can be overwhelming, from taking over. At the end of the road will be Amorgos, with its charm, the Orthodox church and the famous monastery on top of the cliff. But even more so will be the understanding of some things that help to live and understand others.

Marc Fitoussi made this light comedy without much spark or originality, but with beautiful landscapes and a good hand (pay attention to the moment when, in the middle of a crazy dance, a nice memory is embodied). Performers, the comedian Laura Calamywhich can be as cheerful as it is unbearable, Olivia Cote and the still pretty and spirited Kristin Thomas. The ending, logically sentimental and nice, includes an unexpected definition of the philosophical value of disco music, a definition that is not too profound, but practical and valid.
