Robert Downey Jr. excited the fans of Marvel earlier this month when he told Esquire magazine that he would “happily” return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tony Stark/Iron Man after winning the Oscar for best supporting actor in March. There is only one setback: Iron Man died in “Avengers: Endgame” of 2019.
The MCU’s ever-expanding multiverse certainly leaves the door open for Downey’s return (just look at Hugh Jackmanwho returns playing a different version of Wolverine in “Deadpool and Wolverine” after their original X-Men hero died in “Logan”)
In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, the directors of “Avengers: Endgame,” Joe and Anthony Russo expressed some confusion about Downey’s Iron Man reappearance in the MCU after they so heroically killed off the character in their record-breaking movie.
“I don’t know how they would do it,” Anthony said. “I don’t know what the path to that would be. [risas]”.
Joe added: “I mean, we closed that book, so it would be up to them to figure out how to reopen it.”.
What Kevin Feige said about Robert Downey Jr.’s possible return to Marvel.
For what it’s worth, the president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feigedidn’t seem too interested in bringing Downey’s Iron Man back to the big screen when he spoke to Vanity Fair last December.
“Let’s keep that moment and not touch it again”Feige said at the time about Iron Man’s death. “We all worked very hard for many years to get there, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”
However, those comments were made before Downey made it known that he would be open to donning the Iron Man suit again. Given Marvel’s recent box office disappointments (including “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels” last year), Downey’s return could be more attractive since Iron Man has proven to be box office gold for the studio.
“Happily. It’s a very integral part of my DNA.”Downey told Esquire about his return. “That role chose me. And look, I always say, ‘Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige.’ He’s a losing bet. He is the house. He will always win.”
As always with everything related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the ball is in Kevin Feige’s court.
