In the thriller “Civil War” Kirsten Dunst plays a ruthless war photographer in a divided nation. In reality, she is very worried about developments in her country.
Gun violence in the USA is causing Hollywood star Kirsten Dunst great concern – especially with regard to the safety of her own children.
“I can no longer go to the park with my children without prejudice because I have to be afraid that they will be shot. You live with these fears as a mother or father in America,” said the 42-year-old actress of “Bunten”.
Dunst has the leading role in the dystopian action thriller “Civil War,” which opens in theaters on April 18, about a divided nation of the future. When asked about possible parallels to reality, Dunst said: “I’m very worried. Recently, women’s rights in the states have fallen behind again. And the threat from firearms is also getting worse.”
She sees little sign that the situation could get better. “I remember the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. Nothing has changed in terms of gun laws since then. If the deaths of 20 children do nothing, it’s really hopeless.”
Lots of gun violence in the USA
In December 2012, a 20-year-old shot and killed 20 schoolchildren and six teachers in Newtown, Connecticut. In the USA, these bloody acts are sadly part of everyday life. Firearms are easily available there and are widely circulated.
This repeatedly leads to discussions about tightening gun laws, but so far without any real result. As a rule, pushes for stricter gun laws fail because of the Republicans and the powerful gun lobby. President Biden also repeatedly calls for stricter regulations.
