Norwegian royal family: King Harald in good shape after surgery

King Harald has been struggling with health problems for some time. He recently had to undergo pacemaker surgery. But things seem to be looking up.

Norwegian King Harald V (87) appeared in a good mood and apparently in good physical condition for his first official appointment since his pacemaker operation. In a report on the television station NRK you could see Harald getting out of the car in the Norwegian town of Kongsberg, although on crutches, but smiling, together with Queen Sonja (86). When asked how he was doing, Harald said: “Not bad for an 87-year-old. We’re working on it, as they say.”

King Harald fell ill during a vacation in Malaysia at the end of February and was taken to a hospital there. After flying back home, a permanent pacemaker was inserted into him in March. Afterwards, Harald was on sick leave for several weeks. During his absence, his son, Crown Prince Haakon (50), took over all royal duties.

Last week, the Norwegian court announced that Harald would slow down a bit in the future. Given his age, the king wanted to reduce both the number and scope of his tasks, it was said. Harald said to NRK: “I take things a little easier sometimes. Otherwise you won’t notice much of a difference.”

At 87 years old, King Harald is the oldest monarch in Europe. He has been on the Norwegian throne since 1991. He has been struggling with his health for some time now.
