Disney+: the animated series set in Africa that is all the rage around the world

A co-production between pan-African comics and entertainment company Kugali and Disney. Find out what it is about.

This animated series, Iwajú, is set in Lagos, Nigeria and is an ambitious co-production between these two companies to learn a little more about African landscapes and culture. The filmmakers include director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, production designer Hamid Ibrahim, and cultural advisor Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku.

The production features a unique journey through the animated world, brimming with unique visual elements and technological advancements inspired by the spirit of Lagos. It was produced by Christina Chen, and scripted by Adeola and Halima Hudson and is available on Disney + from April 3.

What Iwájú is about, Disney+ animated series

This story follows Tola, a young girl from the prosperous island and her best friend Kole, a self-taught technology expert, in discovering the secrets and dangers hidden in his different worlds. The series begins when Tola’s father gives him what appears to be a pet that is actually a technological robot with cameras in its eyes.

The children live on a paradise island and problems begin when Kole awakens Tola’s curiosity by inviting her to know the continent of Lagos without his father knowing. The story presents a futuristic Nigeria and shows the contrast between technological advances and the complex lifestyle of the rest of the population.
