Society: Best-selling author Wittwer: Women say “sorry” too often

Tara-Louise Wittwer became known with the Instagram account “wastarasagen”. In her new book she advocates apologizing less – in an interview she explains why.

Bestselling author and influencer Tara-Louise Wittwer advocates apologizing less. The cultural scientist, born in 1990, who became known with the Instagram account “wastarasagen”, advises this, especially to women. “In general, you can say that women apologize more often than men,” Wittwer told dpa. “Women are just socialized differently and are conditioned to be somehow smaller and less attention-grabbing,” she said.

In her new book “Sorry, but…”, published by Droemer Knaur, Wittwer writes “a disclaimer of constant apologizing,” as the book’s subtitle says.

The author is convinced that although we often apologize, we don’t always mean it. Sometimes people use apologies just as a filler, as a strategy to get out of a situation, to justify themselves or even to get pity, she said. Apologies are good if they are sincere.

“So if you just say a succinct “Sorry” or even a “Sorry, but…”, then of course that’s different than a real, sincere apology. And if we’re honest, then you can even Not just apologize and move on, but theoretically you should apologize.”

Wittwer also has some advice for people who perhaps apologize too often: “A good tip is always to simply say thank you instead of apologizing all the time. That doesn’t mean that you should never apologize again . Of course not, but that you might just question yourself a little: Was that necessary?”
