The wedding should be the most beautiful day of your life and probably also the most expensive. A study analyzed how much Germans will spend on average on this special day in 2024.
A wedding sometimes requires complex and expensive planning, depending on what the bride and groom’s wishes are for this very special day in their lives. This very special day can quickly add up to a lot of money.
The wedding website “Weddyplace” surveyed 634 couples about their wedding in 2024 and evaluated the costs for the planned celebration in a large wedding study. However, how much does an average wedding cost and what do those getting married spend the most money on and who actually pays for the fun?
In 2024, an average wedding in Germany will cost 15,452.50 euros per couple, which corresponds to an increase of 8.1 percent compared to the previous year. With around 400,000 weddings, the industry’s market volume increases from around 5.7 billion euros to around 6.2 billion euros. Around 22.5 percent of couples are in this price range, while only around one in eight couples spend less than 5,000 euros. Only one in 50 couples spends more than 40,000 euros on the wedding.
Location is the biggest cost factor for a wedding
Most of the money at a wedding goes towards the location and a festive meal as well as enough drinks. After all, the most beautiful day in your life should have the right setting. On average, the future spouses spend 7,803.50 euros on the location, food and drinks. Very few couples (6.4 percent) pay particular attention to spending and spend less than 1,000 euros. The most rare thing among those surveyed is a very opulent wedding: only 3.4 percent treat themselves to a celebration in their dream location and spend more than 20,000 euros.
The guest lists for German weddings will have increased slightly again in 2024. On average, around 66 guests celebrate with the happy couple this year, which corresponds to one additional guest per wedding compared to last year. With around 400,000 weddings per year in Germany, this means that around 26.4 million guests take a seat at the wedding tables.
Around 5.4 percent of brides and grooms even take out a loan for the most beautiful day of their lives. Of the average 15,452.50 euros that a wedding in Germany costs, more than three quarters of all couples pay the entire bill out of their own pocket. Only about one in six couples receives financial support from their parents, but pays the remaining amount themselves. In 1.9 percent of cases, the parents bear all costs alone.
