Théoden is dead. The Hobbit actors around Elijah Wood mourn their “Lord of the Rings” colleague Bernhard Hill.
The Hobbits bow to Bernard Hill (1944-2024). Just a few hours after the Théoden actor’s death, his co-stars from “The Lord of the Rings” paid tribute to him at a fan event in Liverpool. Bernhard Hill was actually supposed to take part in Comic Con this weekend. But the actor had to cancel at short notice because his wife was ill. But then Bernard Hill died on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at the age of 79.
“We lost a member of our family this morning”
Hobbit mimes Elijah Wood (43), Sean Astin (53), Billy Boyd (55) and Dominic Monaghan (47) broke the sad news to fans on Sunday. “We lost a member of our family this morning, Bernard died, like King Théoden,” said Sean Astin. “Before we leave the stage, we want to take a moment to honor him,” said the actor who played Sam Gamgee in the adaptations of the novel by JRR Tolkien (1892-1973).
“We loved him,” Astin continued. “He was fearless, he was funny, he was harsh, he was hot-tempered, he was wonderful,” he said of Hill. “I don’t think anyone has spoken Tolkien’s words as well as Bernard,” added Billy Boyd. “Like that “When he spoke those words, he broke my heart on screen,” said the Pippin actor.
This is how Bernhard Hill wrote Oscar history
Bernhard Hill joined the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy in the second part “The Two Towers”. In the last film “The Return of the King” he once again portrayed Théoden, the King of Rohan. The actor, who was born in Manchester into a mining family, also starred in “Titanic” and played Captain Edward Smith in James Cameron’s (69) disaster spectacle.
Bernhard Hill is the only actor to have appeared in two films that won 11 Oscars. In addition to “Titanic” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” only “Ben Hur” (1959) achieved this.
