Nik P. doesn’t want to retire for a long time. He is currently promoting his new album “What Really Counts” and is planning a tour in the fall.
Friends, family, solidarity: the most important things in life cannot be bought. That is the message of Nik P.’s (62) new album “What really counts”, which was released on May 3rd. In his songs, the Austrian, who became known for the hit “Ein Stern (… that bears your name)”, wants to encourage people to go through life with power and be happy at the same time.
Especially after his intestinal operation eight years ago, followed by biliary colic, these issues came into focus for the singer. In his private life, he found happiness with his fourth wife Karin, whom he married in the Maldives in 2022 and who also temporarily took over his management. The wedding song that he sang for her back then has already been released as a single: “Mein Himmel sind du”. In an interview with the news agency spot on news, Nik P. reveals why the couple chose to go their separate ways professionally – and why he is far from thinking about quitting.
Why did you choose “What really counts” as the album title?
Nik P.: Our zeitgeist motivated me to choose this title. I am currently in a phase of life where my goals in life are being redefined. Therefore, songs with a wide variety of messages were created that, in my opinion, should count more in life.
When did you realize what things really matter to you in life?
Nik P.: There wasn’t that one moment. The true goals were always there, but I was never really able to live up to them. Over time, however, I felt how important it was for me to pay more attention to this and so I changed a few things.
What is your favorite song on the new album and why?
Nik P.: Oh, that’s hard to say. The album has become so diverse and uses so many colors that I can’t decide.
At the age of 62, many people are already thinking about retirement. Is this an issue for you too?
Nik P.: No, my job fills me up so much that I don’t give it a second thought. But that’s probably something I share with a lot of artists. Pension or retirement is not an issue at all among colleagues.
You have had three operations in the past few years. Did you change anything in your life after that?
Nik P.: Of course you become more mindful. But thanks to the right approach, I am now totally fit and have absolutely no symptoms.
For example, are you paying more attention to your health now?
Nik P.: I always have – but of course, I take the necessary prevention and keep myself healthy.
You want to tour Germany with your album in the fall. How do you prepare for this?
Nik P.: I exercise extensively and pay attention to my diet.
Will your wife accompany you on the tour?
Nik P.: She is also setting new goals for herself professionally. So we don’t yet know when and where she will be there. But since the tour will take me to very legendary places in music history, she will definitely be there a few times.
Your wife Karin was also your manager for a while. Why did you split up again professionally?
Nik P.: It was/is a very big challenge when you share everything. To always be in balance with each other 7 days/24 hours so that everything stays in balance. We wanted to keep our private moments as they were and not mix them with professional issues.
This is your fourth marriage. Will you do something different this time so that it doesn’t fall apart?
Nik P.: How should I answer that? I wouldn’t have taken the step if I wasn’t sure…
You like to travel. What destinations are still on your wish list?
Nik P.: Experience the world’s oceans by sailboat.
