More than 92,000 adults observed over 28 years, from 1990 to 2018, who consumed at least 7 grams (just over half a tablespoon) of olive oil per day demonstrated a 28% lower risk of dementia-related deathcompared to those who never or rarely consumed that product.

The same effect was observed when substituting olive oil for mayonnaise or margarine, according to the study, published in JAMA Network Open.
A substitution analysis revealed that replacing 5 grams per day of margarine or mayonnaise with an equivalent amount of olive oil was associated with an 8-14% lower risk of dementia mortality. The study highlights that substitutions with other vegetable oils or butter did not provide significant results.
